The frame of the Climax we have (1692) is indeed made of two pieces of channel steel back to back . Backer plates are rivited on both sides, except where the engine set and the bolster bolt up. This makes the whole assembly about 4 to 5 inches thick (I will have to measure it when I get to work). The advantages are that a crack in one piece will not spread through the entire frame member and the channel creates a secure fastening for the engine set.
