As mentioned previously Chama to Cumbres trains had to have the engines split for the 4% grade and Lobato trestle primarily. On the WB trains some would be 70 cars in the early to mid 60's, and return workings of empties would require 2 Chama to Cumbres turns, since the weight of those empties far exceeded what two locos could handle on the grade. Thus the same two engines would drop back down the hill turn on the wye and do it all again until the entire train was assembled at Cumbres.
Another interesting exception to the rules Mr. West posted, was (and is) the Rotary work trains. When three engines were used, the engine behind the Rotary(OY more recently) would cross then the second engine would cross alone, followed by the third engine with the remaining work cars in tow. I assume the Rotary weights about the same as a couple loaded tank cars, otherwise it would be too heavy to cross the trestle with a loco. Given there are not side rods, the weight is probably acceptable. Any rules in the book about Rotary trains John!
