....about the San Luis and Rio Grande. They seem to be something of a stealth railroad, even though they operate next to the ng. and over La Veta, one of the more interesting remaining mountain passes. Would be interesting to know what their operating schedule typically is. There were rumors of a wreck up on the pass but never much in the way of details. I would guess they are fighting bad track, since most of the line over the pass is 90 lb rail, and the DRGW/SP/UP got by hauling heavy cars over it by paying a LOT of attention to maintenance...which is most likely why UP got rid of it. At least as a few years ago there was still a fair amount of business out of the San Luis Valley, with cars getting left behind at Alamosa because the tonnage was more than four GP40's could handle. Given the ng. roots of this line, it ought to be fair game to discuss here.
