I was on the last Moonlight ride that the Friends had and it was absolutely magical. We left late like this one is shceduled for, and there were beautiful cloud formations that happen late in the days here. The food at Osier was (pre Steven) 'adequate' but not exciting. There were a few chicken dinners if you ordered ahead of time and I can't recall the contents but a vegetarian could fill up as well.
But the trip back ---- stunning. We were behind 463 in the rider gon, and it was dark, so every time the fireman opened the doors an orang glow emanated from the cab and lit the smoke and steam overhead. Wow! Not to mention the thrill of cinders in your ears, and the smell of coal fired steam when the whistle goes off.
First part of the trip the (full) moon hid behind a giant cloud, lighting it from within. Against a dark blue sky it too was Wow! Then the moon came out and lit everything up in silvery light. Another Wow. Coming through the Narrows the Aspens created a strobe-like effect as the train passed by. Wow again.
I don't know if I can afford it this year, but if you can wangle a way to get on that train, be there! You won't regret it. Best train ride I've ever had.
