Herb,
The DPL photo site shows 464 with braces painted the same color as the smokebox in a photo by Otto Perry dated June 30, 1940. The reason the engine looks different is because the smokebox was at that thime painted with graphite and linseed oil. Maybe this could be recreated at some point in the future.
