Handrail colors and safety

Was it a common practice to paint the handrails of passenger coaches the same, or a different, color as the coach body on narrow gauge railroads?
Did each railroad have a different practice in this regard? Did the practice change during different eras?
I would think that for the safety of passengers and crew they would be a different color. Yet, in looking at color photos of freight cars, the grabs and any handrails were painted the same color as the freight car body.
Comments would really be appreciated.
Thanks.
