Earl,
Not only the D&RGW! Many others ran more trains during darkness than in the daylight hours. Mostly this was to satisfy the needs of their customers. Consignors loaded produce today and expected it to be at its destination ASAP. To allow wagons to stand loaded until the sun came up would not have been acceptable. I can think of several places here that rarely saw a train during the day but had several pass through during the hours of darkness. The location relative to the principle loading and unloading points or termini for the particular line often influenced the times that trains passed through.
As you say, this allowed limited, and in some cases nil, opportunities for photographs.
