I presume that the version of "Cry the Beloved Country" under discussion is the colour version? The original was shot around 1950 in Black & White, one of the stars was a young Sidney Poittier. The original shows some very atmospheric railway scenes including a 2' Garratt at Carisbrooke (the local station for the setting of the book) and some very ancient electirc stock.
The 25's (either type) did not exist in 1950. I haven't seen the remake but having both read the book and seen the original film I don't think the new version will be an improvement....
