Dave you are so right. I rode the tender of the lead engine of a 32 car freight from Chama to Cumbres. It was awe inspiring to hear the lead engine and the pusher communicate via whistle signals. Everybody knew what everybody else was doing.
Nowdays, locally at least, the signals have been replaced by a bunch of hoots with no regular rythm and "Highball" has been replaced with "We're out of here," and the pusher is remote controlled from the lead engine. I still
get a kick out of watching, but I wonder what Dad and some of the old "Rails" would think if they were here. Jim
