To occupy the main track you got to have two things, authority and protection. Authority can be a track warrant, train orders, signal indication in ctc and some railroads even issue a general order ! as authority to occupy a main track. Protection can be provided in several ways signal indications in abs territory with authority provided by track warrant or train order, by the dispatcher in ctc, and in non signal territory by the flagging kit or by a track warrant or train order that states flag protection not required for following trains. Sometimes you can use a track warrant with a "work between" that will let you work in both directions between two locations sometimes with or without a time limit. Or you can just say the hell with it and make everything yard limits. Hope this didnt confuse anyone. ha ha.
