Bill,
The cushions in the two D&RGW cabooses at the Loop and those on the 0578 at CRRM are horsehair cushions covered with pantesote, with the usual buttons to keep them in one relative piece.
Pantesote was used as a seat and cusion covering in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was the precursor to the vinyl coverings that we have today.
Heck, just go out and shoot some Black Nauga's and use them.
