Paul, I believe "Vulcan" was a Greek god of some major importance. The locomotives were properly designated "Vauclain compound" after Samuel L. Vauclain, a heavy-hitter at Baldwin who developed the system. It worked, but had maintenance problems and a great many Vauclain compounds, including the K-27's, were simpled at some point in their careers. You're not alone in using the designation "Vulcan", I did the same thing for years until I got new glasses once.
