Ed, both of those shots were taken in 1949.
The second is at Telluride, where it had pulled the annual Rocky Mountain RR Club Excursion.
I believe the first picture was reported here a few months back as having possibly been taken on a test run. It couldn't have been the first run on the RGS, however, because it already has 4 pane windows in the cab. These were broken out by an engineer wielding a brake club on the first run to Durango.
The only other differences visible (other than paint) in these pictures to it's C&S roots are the window opening in the front of the cab for the fireman to see the stack, and the removal of the Ridgway Cinder Catcher.
The boiler jacketing in 1949 was green.
Soon afterward there were several other changes made.
For more info, see the History of #74 at Bill White's RGS Technical Page. I guess I better update it pretty soon, since there's recent news.
