Years ago when the D&S was just getting started I thought I read a line in a magazine somewhere they were going to have new code boilers made for the K-37's. It wouldn't fix any other things like excess weight but one would have a nearly "half new" locomotive in the process, one that you wouldn't have to worry about boiler problems for a good length of time. After the engine in Gettysburg lost its crown sheet (I had gotten a short cab ride in that engine just about a year before) and reading a few stories about boiler failures the idea sounds good. Wouldn't the initial cost still be less than all of the maintenance that is done on a worn out boiler over a span of time?
