Re: Lifespan of a wheel

The wheels on our streetcar here in Fort Collins, Colorado were Griffin/Denver 1946 vintage when we got the car. The wheels were in service from 1946 to 1951 and again from 1984 to 1998 when we finally wor them out. We replaced them with FRA/AAR certified steel wheels to be in compliance with FRA regulations as we are considered non-insular due to our public grade crossings. Our old wheels are now under another Birney car on display at Island Grove Park in Greeley, Colorado.
