Depends on the service

Jason ,when I first went to work in Chama in 1973
there were a number of Griffin/Denver wheelsets around from as early as 1915 either in cars or around . Aparently the D&RGW had thousands of wheelsets in Alamosa and when they finally saw employemnt is a guess . Some cars saw only sporadic use (like stock cars) and the wheelsets saw a long life . The ex-Uintah water car #25 (D&RGW 0470)in my yard has wheels cast by Griffin/Denver in the 1940s but still has one wheel cast for the Uintah ! So does the rotary OM tender in Chama (from Uintah 2-8-2 #30 ) . Since then the FRA requires new wheelsets to be of turned steel on passenger cars .I don't know their life cycle ,but on passenger cars it could be much shorter . I know that the passenger cars on both the C&TS and D&SNG have turned steel wheelsets at this time .
