This brings up another issue...signs.
I shot plow operations in Canada, and the CPR and CN always had trackside plows with signs to tell the plow operators of upcoming crossings, or close clearance, so the wings could be brought in. I have a shot at a location where the CN goes under the CP line, and there is close clearance on one side, and a pole with a 45 degree angle jutting from it on one side of the pole told the plow operator the side where the clearance was close, and one wing would be brought up. Also horizontal indicators told when to raise the flange between the rails for switches and crossings. These things were operated by air also, as I rode in one when they were plowing a siding in Palmerston, Ont. These things were a major contrast to the Rotary which I saw a few years later on Cumbres!!!

PS...So why didn;'t the Rio Grande have trackside poles to indicate stuff under the snow???
