With regards to N scale turnouts, a frined and I have been handlaying turnouts for his layout. We found that the pecos did not like longer rolling stock and just did not work very well with what we were doing (ATSF out of Kansas City). I have picked up handlaying turnouts within the past year or so and I would find it difficult to go back and use commercial turnouts in anything other than staging. So far I have layed mostly N scale #8's and #10's. I have had to do a couple of stub 3 ways for my layout and a couple of coustom turnouts as well.
While it may look hard to hand lay a turnout, it realy is'nt. It just takes some experence. If you have any questions, contact me off list and I would be happy to share with you what I have learned.
