Another big issue about it was that it was (is) rusted all to h-e-double-toothpicks. Much, if not most of it would have to be replaced. Digging the pit would have been minor compared to making everything sound again - cost wise.
The asthetic problem is it's height. As mentioned it was (is) a bridge type unit and, as I recall, it would have dwarfed the coal tipple.
As for long term, I personally believe that what is needed is a full size, full capacity engine repair facility along the lines of those that existed in Almosa; except for being more modern. Putting such a monstrosity close to the current facility would be a bad idea, but south of the wye where the lumber mill used to be seems appropriate. The current shop area would then be used for running repairs (much as it currently is) and could be used for display purposes.
Of course I'd also like to see a clutch of C-16's and maybe a T-12 or two as well.
But for now, I'll be quite happy with four operational engines, and decent track.
