John - I'd guess that a lesser percentage are the true jerks. As for the rest, as you said, we all have good and bad days. The trick is to try to just be good people, to try and be remembered for the right reasons. Or better yet, get through life without trying to make a name for ones self. Perhaps persons worthy of note will be recognized in the long haul.
On the other hand, to paraphrase the line from Deteriorata, "A walk through the Ocean of Most Souls will scaresly get your feet wet"
