Bootlegging and illegal stills were big in the Prohibition era .They still talk about an astoundingly ugly woman and her half-wit son who made a legendary distillation in the hills west of Chama. I am certain stray cats were added to the pot to add "flavor" Many railroaders were allegedly were involved in the collusion to transport of these contraband spirits.
