Thank you Jerry for correcting Paul about the method that time can run out on a unused rebuilt engine. I would wish folks would only post here with the data they know is best to their line of knowledge. The Hallack & Howard Lumber Co. at La Madera never was not or ever became part of the New Mexico Lumber Co. Paul is confusing "The Montezuma Lumber Co." (H&H) at Glencoe with "Montezuma Lumber Co." at McPhee which was previously New Mexico Lumber Co. but two entirely different companies with the same name.
And Mike, our trip from Cass to Elkins for the Mountain Forest Festival was not with #6 (ex WM #6) but with a original Mower Lumber Co. Shay.
Others on this Group could confirm that #6 was not in operation when the railroad was open to Elkins. I do not know if #6 ever went to the Elkins Festival.
And as for the speed of a Shay, it can exceed the speed of any train climbing Cumbres Pass on the C&TS. Why do so many folks have the feeling that a Shay is too slow to match a C&TS train? To them I say - Find a Shay and ride behind it somewhere!
