If you're going digital, get a digital SLR. Then, as cameras get better you can upgrade the body without having to repurchase your lenses.
Canon and Nikon are both excellent, and the megapixel race will make the Nikon D100 pretty inexpensive. I don't think I'd go for the D70 at this point - the D100 would be a better long-term choice.
A friend has a D100, and has given up on film completely. Tests are showing that the resolution on a D100 matches or beats most medium-format cameras. The next camera I get will be that 12 Megapixel Nikon (don't think I'm going for the $8,000 Canon
