I'd consider a couple hours committed to riding the MetroLink Light Rail System. It runs from Lambert Airport eastbound covering the old Wabash RR Passenger Main. From Union Station it travels under downtown thru a beautiful century old masonary arch tunnel before exiting at Lacledes Landing then crossing the Mississippi River on the historic Eads Bridge. The tunnel is illuminated, so ride near the windshield of the front car. The line continues EB toward Scott AFB, but I'd suggest turning around in E. St. Louis because there are simply too many neat attractions to explore adjacent to the Missouri stations. Consider purchasing an all day pass so that you can jump off and explore. I think they cost 4 or 5 bucks.
PS: When you visit the Museum of Transport, be sure to take the free guided tours. The volunteer docents are great and journey thru President Harry Truman's rail car is a class act.
