Greg,
It's called "gassing." The fuel turns to a gas before getting to the burner and explodes when entering the firebox. Gassed fuel has less heating capacity, and the explosions ("drumming") can actually dislodge the firebrick from the lining of the firebox. Drumming can also be caused by running the atomizer too high.
