Re: Co. Hist. Wants the 60, 111, and 71

To answer your question about the condition of all three of these engines - they all need lots of work to ever run again. The C&S 71 is probably in the best shape of the 3, having last run in 1989. However, as has been mentioned before on this forum, the last operator to run it did not take good care of it, and it sounds like the 71 would now need extensive boiler and firebox work.
The same can be said about the C&S 60 and the IRCA/Sundown & Southern 111. Neither of these engines have run in the past 40-50 years, with the C&S 60 not having run since 1941, when it was left in Idaho Springs after having an unknown mechanical problem, and being left where it sat.
Regarding the power of these engines, the 111 is the only one that could pull an equivalent size train to those that GLRR Inc. currently uses. The 60 & 71 doubleheaded could probably pull this same size train, but not alone.
Regarding fuel, both the 60 & 71 are coal, while the 111 is oil. If any coal burning engines would be used by CHS to run on the Loop, they would almost certainly be converted to oil.
