That's the excitement I remember when I was your age. That's why I helped when I could on "cutting" coal in S&A 750's or SRR 630's tender and refueling them.
And why I helped in the wood line wooding up the Eureka. Darned good fun sharing the hands-on experience.
I have never gotten around to operating a standard gauge (either US or Colorado) locomotive. Never quite worked out. But operating a 2.5" scale C-19 steamer or a 15" gauge "diesel" (gas-mechanical actually with vacuum brakes and MU capability) has always been exciting.
Don't give up.
