Just a comment on train audio in the video you saw. Yes, it is annoying when narration covers up good original train sounds, be it exhaust on a good grade or a whistle. We try to avoid that.
I don't know which video you watched, but you mentioned the word FILM, and since it was in the 80's its possible it was shot on FILM, not video. Keep in mind that most(95%)of train FILMS were silent, and 99% of original VIDEO was shot with sound. On older films, one has to create a sound track, or there is simply silence. What I am saying is that perhaps the producers used dubbed train sounds, thus they figured narrating, or whatever over it was okay. On the other hand if it was original audio, and narrated over, I agree with you that it is annoying.
I am working on a 16mm film project from the 1950-60's, and have selected some nice music cuts for it. However, I could attempt to dub in 1990's audio from the D&S and C&TS, to attempt to put REAL train sounds. However, I don't have audio for some things like, Doubleheader from Alamosa-Antonito, 464 switching in Durango, Doubleheaders in Monero Canyon, and 478 on a passenger special from Alamosa. Also the whistles are likely all different. I don't have sounds of 494 or 499 for example.
So, I am likely going to simply use some narration and let the music carry the show, cause the visuals are the main thing to enjoy anyway. This 16mm is quite nice, and there are shots where the photographer hiked to the Animas bridge and other High Line Locations, as well as other positions between Chama and Durango that are long gone. I always enjoy seeing this old stuff, but then I can relate to it since I remember it as a youth.
Cheers,
Greg
PS..Another option is to turn off the volume if one doesn't like the sound tracks that are created!
