The First photo is a ballast regulator. The round area to the left of the picture is the brush. IT literally brushes the stone smooth in the cribs of the track. The opposite end which looks like a plow is exactly that. It is used for plowing ballast from or around the track. A regulator usually follows a tamper which tamps the tie and track structure tight. The second appears to be a hydro-spiker. A hydro spiker is what it sounds like. It uses hydraulic cylinders to push the spikes into the ties. Ive run both types of equipment in my younger years. Fun and interesting stuff!
