Maybe small but quite a structure. A lovely stone building, 6 stalls, which was a decent sized structure by South Park standards, situated inside the wye along with iron turntable, storage sheds and the stone-based water tank, it remained in use until 1910. A good-sized roundhouse for modelers! There were machinists on staff here, though no formal machine shop building, and they did regular engine repairs and service, though serious repairs would be sent to Como or Denver. Considering that the line west of Alpine Tunnel was isolated every year by closures that could run from 3-12 months, the Gunnison staff was responsible to keep operations running on the South Park track west of the tunnel, from Pitkin to Gunnison to the coal mines at Baldwin. A scrappy operation running on a shoestring.
