My dates are based on Jimmy's trainsheet info for September 14, 15, and 16. On the 14th the 483 was called to run from Durango to Chama but didn't make it. That was also the day the 493 and 492 ran Alamoda to Chama. On the 15th the 487 ran from Durango to Chama, and the 493 and 492 did a Cumbres turn plus some MOW work east of Cumbres but ending up back at Chama. On the 16th the 493 and 487 ran Chama to Alamosa, the 483 ran lite Durango to Gato, the 492 ran Chama to Gato, and the 483 and 492 ran Gato to Durango.
On the 14th the 487 ran a work train on the Silverton branch. I can only guess that at the last minute the 483 and 487 at Durango swapped jobs, and the 483 ended heading east (with a short side trip with the dragline onto the Farmington branch)....only to be blocked by the slip out. So Chama was probably expecting the 487. When the 487 did get to Chama on the 15th it did go through to Alamosa on the 16th so apparently it was due for some shop work at Alamosa.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. But it was an interesting time on the ng. with lots of MOW activity (dragline on the Farmington branch, Silverton branch ballast train, spreader working on Cumbres, and the slip out). For example the train sheets do not show all the trips made to MP 446.2 with slag, so I can only assume there were additional orders not shown on the trainsheet, or the moves were made with flag protection without orders. All this is sufficiently confusing that I'm sticking with my more or less correct comment. But it is like putting a jig saw puzzle together, so it is fun.
