A timed-freight should be one that adhered to a specific schedule. The Southern Pacific (sg) had scheduled second-class freights in its employee Time Tables. These, I suppose, were used to expedite freight over the divisions.
Other freight work would have been done by an extra train. These might have regular crew call times and days.
