This is a view I hope none of us ever see of our favorite locomotive in the present day. This occurred in 1948 on the White Pass & Yukon Route when #81 was backing up a work train which derailed and took the locomotive with it into Lake Fraser. #81 was pulled from the lake, repaired and retuned to service for about another ten years. Where is the locomotive today? This is none other than Sumpter Valley Ry. #19. She was purchase new by the SVRy, sold to the White Pass in Jan. of 1941 and returned to Oregon with her sister in 1977. #19 was restored to operation in 1996. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
