476 and 481

August 26, 2004 09:14PM
If you have not heard, 481 broke a wrist pin about 2 weeks ago. Repairs took one week and she was in steam during Railfest. If there are no more bad wrist pins, it looks like 476 is up for her boiler lift and repair next summer. Apparently, the bolt holes in the cylinder block are worn out of round allowing the cylinder block to torque every time the valve gear moves. The boiler still has time on the 1472 day inspection, so there is not problem about replacing/majorly overhauling the boiler. It'll be nice to see the old girl back out on the line.
