Nevada-California-Oregon Ry progress

December 14, 2023 11:25AM
Toiling away in Alturas, California, one of the newest preservation groups in the US has made large strides in the last 3 years to preserve one of the longest narrow gauge railroads on the West Coast.

Since our founding in 2021, 94 years after the original N-C-O Ry was standard gauged and passed into history, the new Nevada-California-Oregon Railway group has acquired 3 freight cars and 3 passenger cars all original to the N-C-O, with several more coming in the next two years. In addition, we have acquired parts for restoration, secured a covered storage and restoration location, and purchased a historic structure of the N-C-O: the 1917 built, Frederic deLongchamps designed Employee Cottage, located on Main Street just south of the famous N-C-O Headquarters Building.

We have started restoration work on boxcar 518 and just completed phase 1 of the restoration on the Employee Cottage. This blitz involved numerous volunteers and contractors with a goal of completing work by December 11, when we would begin sharing use of the cottage with an after-school youth program. This 5 year partnership provides the N-C-O Ry with a unique opportunity to give back to the community and receive funds to aid the restoration.

We have ambitious plans for the next few years to preserve and restore more rolling stock from the N-C-O, share it with the public, and eventually develop first an exhibit museum and eventually an operating museum in Alturas.

To help make this possible, we invite you to donate to the NCO and / or join as a member.

We currently have a FundRazr going for the Employee Cottage: [fundrazr.com] We are just $6,300 from our $30,000 goal.
