Great photos. We came to the Puffing Billy unaware of the leg dangling tradition. At first we were stunned, but before long we were doing it too! An awesome way to travel!

Accumulating cinders in the smokebox is standard practice on most European Railroads. It helps to prevent forest fires and does a lot to prevent showering passengers and the countryside with cinders. It does require an easy to open smokebox door to facilitate shoveling out the smokebox after each tour of duty. No master mechanic cinder ejector system here.
