Second Russo on McPhee.
As I may have mentioned here before, McPhee's
Coming into the Country was first recommended to me by the WP&Y conductor as we sat across from each other on the rear platform of a mixed train, the coupler between us, watching the 3' track recede into the distant tundra with nothing but the North Country to see and discuss. I was not able to get a copy until I returned to the "Lower 48" as they called it (when not using words I can't use here). When I did I realized I had met some of the folks McPhee observed and wrote about and/or their close kin.
The cruise ships are for the tourists. Alaskans use their ferries. So it comes down to who you want to meet. Not that you won't meet people worth meeting on both! The ferries have been good to me.
