The Carcross train is the least crowded and offers the best scenery. I don’t know our schedule for next season but I’ve heard rumors of some exciting trips with steam, so we’ll see what’s made public.
The ferry has decent food and it’s not a ripoff like the end stage capitalism that Skagway has become. We lost some great restaurants that the locals loved the past few years, but I would agree that The Station is one of the better spots locals go, and Klondike Brewing is vastly superior to Skagway Brewing. I miss the old location of Skagway Brewing and they have become incredibly proud of their food as reflected in the price increases on the menu. The grocery store is also basically a monopoly. If you visit Haines, the groceries and far better in quality and price.
This year there were a ton of new rental cars driving around town. I believe the chain would be Avis, while there are local options as well. If you want to see the area for a couple days, might be an option. Whitehorse is cool and has some good museums and restaurants.
Please ride something that’s not a summit trip. Do a Carcross or steam trip if you’re able.
