Sage and grass burn real nice though. The very first weekend the NN ran in 1987, I ran the 40 for them. Coal had been bought from a mine in Utah. It was very hard, difficult to get to light, but once burning it burned very hot - almost like anthracite. It did however make tiny little red hot cinders that went right through the smokebox spark netting. I could see the nasty little devils landing on the running boards in the tunnel. They glowed cherry red for a long time. We lit over 100 individual fires that weekend. At first the local fire dept thought it was great fun, then the novelty wore off. A stack screen was installed on #40 as a purely political move. The problem was solved by getting coal from the same supplier that provides (or provided) coal for the D&S and C&TS - King Coal in Hesperus, CO. Once we did that, no more fires. King Coal still provides the NN's coal supply.
