I am going down in a bit to watch as Loren prepares to start the residing of the car. I'm confined to a wheelchair but have been watching as the car progresses. Matt did his home work and had most of the needed parts. Loren has fabricated a whole new underframe including complete brake gear, correct piping, and trucks with complete brake gear. Considering that this car was taken out of service in the 1940s and sat on the ground for years serving as a playhouse for children, then was donated to the City of Salida, it has come a long ways. There is almost no evidence of the former intense railroad activity in Salida and even the remaining standard gauge line is a mere shadow of itself, and inactive for over thirty years. The caboose will be on display roughly where the former Salida station was located. I first saw Salida when all the three rail trackage was intact and the yard was full of cars that had been recently been in service on the Monarch branch.
