I'm glad I took the time to dig out McKensie's "Mountain to Mill" to check my facts instead of relying on my leaky memory.
Over the years, CF&I had a total of 14 narrow gauge diesels on the property. They were 3' gauge, not 2' as I stated. All except one were 4-wheel GE's, the oddball was a 50 ton Whitcomb, which may be the one I remember as being "foreign". 10 were 25 ton GE's acquired in 1947. Two of these were sold to the WP&Y in 1969.
I don't know how many of these are still around. When I was consulting for CF&I I don't think that I ever saw more than two at any one time. But the mill was a big place, and who knows what may have been squirreled away in a dark corner somewhere. Not many I suspect as since they got a separate arc furnace for the rail mill, they would no longer have to transport ingots from the main arc furnace building over to the rail mill. That was the only use for these diesels.
