I have quite a number of Beebe & Clegg books in my library. I consider them very entertaining and readable books, but you had better check out any facts presented. One night, years ago, I sat down with B&C's "Rio Grande-Mainline of the Rockies" and started writing down all of the factual errors I could find. My list of errors came to five pages. for example:
on page 50 they state that the" Lobato trestle is the highest bridge on the Alamosa-Durango run." This is incorrect, as the Lobato trestle is 100' high and the Cascade Cr. trestle is 137' high.
on page 250 they state that the rails of the Moffat Road reached Craig, Colorado in 1911. This is also incorrect, as the rails actually reached Craig in November of 1913.
one more example: on page 23, under the photo of men on a hand car, B&C state that the scene was taken at Colton, Utah "in the construction of the original line of the Pleasant Valley RR, soon to become an element in the ever-growing Rio Grande Western". However, the Utah & Pleasant Valley RR did not pass through Colton, Utah-so either the picture is not at Colton or the Railroad is not the Utah & Pleasant Valley.
I have quite a few more of these factual errors from just the "Mainline of the Rockies" book alone. I have spotted errors in other B&C books as well; so read em' and enjoy em', but check out the facts.
