The use of "stage" continued as you indicated, especially pre-WW2. What we call a bus was once called a "motor coach" or a "motor stage." Either term indicated a motor vehicle designed or used to carry unrelated people for a fare.
Some current bus operators use these terms in their business or corporate names. In fact, I rode such a charter bus just last week -- Amador Stage Lines -- for field trips for a railroad history gathering in Sparks, Nevada. The company is based in Sacramento CA and Reno NV and counts its history back to 1852.
