No experience needed. You really couldn't make smoke if you tried. Broad Top coal is ugly in the tender, either boulders or dust with nothing in between, and the fire it makes is just as ugly, mountains and hollows and caked over dust. But it doesn't smoke.
I saw some right-of-way paperwork for what is now the New Hope & Ivyland, and as one of the requirements for running trains there was that the engines be fired with Broad Top coal. 19th century N I M B Y's!
I like a nice smoke trail as much as the next man, but if the goal is to make a believable phraud-o-graph, then they need to run with a clear stack. Otherwise, they might as well paint pink polka-dots on the equipment.
