I was always surprised too. About eight years ago
Steve Otten (D&S engineer) and I took the 473 on a shakedown run to Rockwood right after a major running gear overhaul. We carefully and slowly negotiated the stub switch while turning the engine and were quite pleased in our conscientious efforts as we picked up the speed a little just off of the switch. A car length later the rails of the east leg of the wye collapsed under the engine. I guess vigilance must never cease!
