Here is one of the industries served by the Sumpter Valley Ry. This is looking south at the Baker White Pine Lbr. Co. mill at South Baker. Baker White Pine built its first mill with a company town near Austin, Oregon on Crawford Cr. with a connection to the Sumpter Valley Ry. at White Pine near MP 55. This operation had an extensive railroad logging network with three Climax engines. In 1913, the company expanded their operation, building the large mill with planer, dry kilns and box factory at South Baker seen in this shot. Baker White Pine also purchased timber at numerous location adjacent to the Sumpter Valley Ry. so over the course of years there were many places along the mainline where switches were cut in for BWP logging spurs. Logs on flat cars presumably off of the spur lines closer to Baker came directly to this mill and were dumped in the pond by the SVRy switch engine. Rough lumber from the White Pine also came to South Baker for final finishing. Note in the photo the log dump track at the far side of the pond has empty log flats with some not yet unloaded. The facilities on the right side of the photo were the planer and box factory which had a loading dock next to the Sumpter Valley Ry. dual gauge mainline. In terms of location today, this facility was directly south of the UP main line and to the east of David Eccles Road. Baker White Pine Lbr. Co. went into receivership in 1928 and was taken over by the Stoddard Lumber Co. In the late 1930's the Lighthall family who had obtained a controlling interest in the Oreogn Lumber Co. and Sumpter Valley Ry. purchased the Stoddard operation. The planer and box factory burned in 1942 and I have not determined if it was rebuilt. I am guessing not since the Oregon Lumber Co. facilities were nearby and under common ownership. The sawmill probably did not last long after the Sumpter Valley Ry. mainline shut down in 1947. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
