Hmmm. I hadn't heard of blasting snow drifts before, but I guess it's better than hiring 150 winos to shovel out the cuts when lacking a rotary.
I wouldn't think that black powder would have been used for blasting rock, unless the construction in question took place before the invention of dynamite. From Wikipedia: "Dynamite is an explosive made of nitroglycerin, sorbents (such as powdered shells or clay) and stabilizers. It was invented by the Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel in Geesthacht, Northern Germany and patented in 1867. It rapidly gained wide-scale use as a more powerful alternative to black powder."
