I start with a 4000 dpi TIFF file and convert that to a 300 dpi Photoshop file. For purposes of posting only it is converted to a much smaller jpeg so that it will upload/download reasonably quickly for those like myself who are using dial up modems.
I agree you version looks better. Several issues here. One, you may simply be better at it than I am. Two, I am using a LE version of PS, and it may lack some of the finer controls of the more expensive version. For example my Levels function is RGB and lacks a specific cyan adjustment. And finally, one of my challenges is my color balance is designed primariy for my printer. And what looks good out of the printer isn't always quite as good on the screen. Also, I do my photography work with a very bright Apple screen and lighten the pix up somewhat arbitrarily for posting so that they don't look too dark on non-Apple monitors. An interesting change for a guy who learned photography in a darkroom....where I still do my B&W.
Many thanks for the feed back.
