September 14 1965, if my notes are correct. It had been a wet summer. The Farmington branch was closed for repairs so the 483 left town with a short train of lumber loads headed east, and pushing the dragline. At Carbon Junction it cut off from the train and pushed the dragline down the Farmington branch to a soft fill that was being replaced not too far from Carbon Junction, near the old drive in theater.
It then headed east with its train, but found a slip out near where the hospital is now.
After a few carloads of clinker were pushed out from Durango to fill the hole, the 487 finally took the train to Chama the next day.
