That's quite an exotic example of
"A picture is worth 1,000 words!" I presume they were taken somewhere in the antipœdes, as neither appears to follow typical practice here in the posipœdes.* I'm guessing the second one shows a bit of the very complex multi-gauge situation in Perth, Western Australia — IIRC there were as many as four different gauges in the yard several years ago.
Nonetheless, my drawing shows the general practice on most U.S. lines back in the day – such as on the D&RGW at Alamosa and SFAIK Salida – and currently at both the CRRM and NSRM.
